Service Is the Only Complaint
We enjoyed the food and the beer. The only complaint was a 45 minute wait for the food. (They apologetically admitted they had forgotten to put the order in - we got the beers free though.)

We have lived in Waltham for 8 years - originally coming from out west. This is the only restaurant we have found that we consider authentic Mexican food in the entire Boston area. Love the area, love the tacky decor, love the outside seating on spring and summer evenings. Family owned and the pride shows. Carlos, (one of the cooks and the son of the owner) is tops!

Our Favorite Restaurant
We really love this place. We like to eat all the excellent salsa and to cool off with the licuados after all the spices. Entrees are tasty too. Inexpensive. Wonderfully tacky interior and Spanish (Mexican) jukebox selections. A real shock to go to the two fake Mexican restaurants in town after this one (and this restaurant is only a few blocks away from the fake ones).
Recommended: licuado, plato vegeteriano

Great Food, Excellent Prices
A friend described this place as serving "the sort of food Mexican truck drivers would eat". It's real Mexican food, not snobby dishes with a Mexican influence. The food is delicious, filling and cheap. Every time I go I have a dilemma - do I order one of my favorites from the past or try something new? I've liked almost every thing there, so it's hard to decide. The sausage and potato appetizer (a flauta?) is amazing. The banana and strawberry milkshakes are wonderful. I love the mushroom burrite. The list goes on... The service is decent, but certainly not blazingly fast. I think the other reviewers are expecting too much.

This Is the Real Thing
I grew up 20 miles from the Mexican border in California, and I have spent a great deal of time in Mexico. When I first went to Taqueria Mexico in Waltham I was blown away the moment I entered. I was back in Mexico. This place isn't fancy, it isn't expensive, but it is exactly like you walked into a neighborhood restaurant somewhere in Mexico. The shrine to the Virgin is there, along with the specials board (in Spanish, of course), velvet paintings, the entire thing is so authentic that it takes a moment to realize they didn't intend to create a replica, but rather the people who run this place ARE Mexican and they're just doing it like they did back home. To those who complain about the slow or bad service: Get a grip, when you enter Taqueria Mexico you are as good as in Mexico itself - the land of "Manana" (everything can wait until tomorrow). This is simply the Mexican culture - no hurry, no worry. If you expect speedy American service go to an American restaurant. This is simply how it is in Mexico - and Taqueria Mexico is no different. If you want the entire experience without having to pay the airfare then I strongly suggest eating at Taqueria Mexico - but don't expect fast food. Relax, take in the atmosphere, and enjoy a real Mexican dining experience.

The Worst Service Ever
I certainly hope our experience is not representative of the usual. We were seated on a not-very-busy Wednesday night. They did not serve us our drinks until approximately 1/2 hour. After waiting nearly an hour for a gordita and quesadilla we reminded our waiter that we had ordered. It was another 15 minutes until they arrived. No apology. No explanation. Our waiter also never came to refill our drinks a single time during the time we were there. The food was mediocre to boot.

Good Food Good Prices
This place is a find to say the least. They have relatively good food, prices, and interior that was furnished with a 10 dollar gift certificate to the dollar store. Be sure to check your receipt at the end- there are no prices on it and they have been know to add on a few bucks (gringo tax)above menu price. Just ask them to recalculate and they come back with the right bill. Be sure to try the sangria - the pitcher is a good deal.

Great Cheap Eat Hidden in Waltham.
The food is always delicious, a real deal for the price. The service always leaves much to be desired. The waiters are often slow, inattentive and forgetful.

Where the Mexicans Eat
Forget the Americanized stuff that gets passed off as Mexican food around these parts. This is the real thing. Doesn't look like much from the outside though. Be brave and wander in. Tastes of cilantro and salsa. Great prices and velvet paintings.
