Restaurant - Sushi

Chef Aki Kawata presides over this small sushi bar in northern Berkeley. There's not a huge selection of fish, but his patrons swear by its quality. Several types of vegetables (pickled daikon, burdock root, avocado, and others) are also available - vegetarians won't be left hungry. Aki, who was trained in part by the sushi chef for the late Japanese emperor, may also offer genial advice on how to eat and prepare sushi, and how to recognise a good sushi chef.

Sushi Sho a No-Go!
Sushi Sho is sho' bad. Save your money and drive to Kirala. After waiting for 45 minutes with nary a waitperson in sight, as the "genial" sushi chef and his bitter apprentice, argued over who would make the next orders. In the meantime, the chef refused customers at the door for some reason unbeknownst to us. Meanwhile, we looked over and with a momentary sigh of relief saw the apprentice chef making our order of sushi. Only to find out that he was about to be sent home because he was deathly ill with the flu. Now, should we eat that Unagi or let it be? I'll let you be the judge of that one. In any case, Sushi Sho is a no-go.

Authentic Sushi
Are you tired of plastic shiso leaves? Hot Japanese food served in the same room as sushi? Non-Japanese speaking servers in a Japanese restaurant? Pop Japanese background music? Then this is the place to come. Chef Kawata is as authentic as they can be. He is comfortable speaking his first language, Japanese. He is second generation sushi chef (his dad had a sushi bar in Japan and his brothers still work in sushi restaurants in Japan.) Kawata-san adheres to the strictest traditions of sushi. You won't find any "light" soy sauce. Your nigiri will not be cut in half (for easier eating). What you will get is authentic 100% proper Japanese sushi.

This is the standard!
My wife and I have been to Sushi Sho about 20 times over the past few years. We have also been to a lot of other Sushi restaurants. We always compare the others to Sushi Sho. It is the standard for us. The selection is simple, but the quality and preparation is nothing short of perfection. Do not go if you are in a hurry. Some of the best things in life come on someone else's time table.
