Is this place still serving sicilian food?

Like many East Villagers, I was heartbroken when La Focacceria closed last year. It was a neighborhood institution that had been forced out by skyrocketing rents. I thought I'd never have their unique and delicious Sicilian food again but, luckily, they have just reopened up the street at 221 First Avenue, between 13th and 14th Streets. With Vinnie's blessing, the former employees are keeping up La Focacceria's 91 year tradition.

The food is exactly as it was before. The portions remain generous and the prices are low to moderate. My personal favorites -- mozzerella en corroza; spaghetti with mussels and marinara sauce; vegetables, like broccoli raab with garlic and olive oil, escarole with garlic and olive oil, swiss chard with garlic and tomatoes; lentils and greens soup; fish chowder -- all these things are to die for! I am not a meat eater, but the vasteddi sandwiches are legendary, and cheap too, only $2.95.

Since La Focaccera moved into an existing Mexican restaurant, they also offer Mexican food, too. It looks great, though I haven't tried it yet. I'm just so happy to have the Sicilian food back.

La Focacceria is a friendly, neighborhood place with great food, low prices, and a casual atmosphere.

Vastedi Sandwiches
As a kid growing up on the lower east side of NYC, La Focacceria was one of the places we used to go and eat, We had it all great pizza and chinese and just all kinds of foods. So to go to Vinnies place was just different. What I remember most was the Vastedi sandwiches man were they great it was an aquired taste but just the same it was one of the best eats in town. I now live in Cleveland but when in the city the first place I go is Vinnies place La Focacceria on First Ave.
