Restaurant - Tea House

The Huntington Library and Gardens serves tea each afternoon in the Rose Garden Room. A fixed price includes tea (your choice of the two teas of the day) or lemonade, and as many trips to the buffet as you'd like. The buffet includes finger sandwiches (lox, cucumber, watercress, tuna, tomato ...), several types of cheese with crackers, fresh fruit with cream, chocolate cups with lemon pudding and meringue, tiny tarts with fresh fruit over a creamy layer, and more. You need to pay admission into the Huntington to get to the restaurant, and you are encouraged to wander the grounds before and after your meal.

The Red Hat Ladies
It was a great pleasure to visit this touch of European taste which has so many different culinary appetizers brought here to the USA in memory to their home country. With surprise I wore a purple dress, too, and if I would have had a red hat I would have matched the ladies from the Red Hat Club perfect. I took some pictures and would like to pass them on.

HAVING A BAD DAY
I have tea at the Huntington 6-8 times a year. I have always enjoyed the view, the food, the service and the marvelous teas. However, my visit on Saturday, April 26 was a terrible experience. The chicken salad sandwiches tasted strictly of boullon cubes; the watercress was masked with so much horseradish that it was there in color only. The waitress was so bad I will refuse to sit in her secion should I ever be assigned to her area in the future. I have recommended this tea to numerous friends, but had this been my first experience I would never have returned. I plan to return; however, should I encounter the same terrible service, inedible sandwiches and a waitress who could not remember the type of tea which was ordered, nor fill our request for the particular scones which we ate -- leaving the currant and chocolate chips which had been served -- it will be my last visit.

Don't pass up to opportunity to have tea here, in the former home of a railroad baron. The food is great, and the surrounding gardens beautiful. (Don't miss the cactus garden.) The lox sandwiches sprinkled with dill are tasty, and the watercress sandwiches are also good. But the best part of the buffet is dessert: the fresh fruit and the fruit tarts. Service is excellent. The servers are always friendly, and they're very quick to clear away dirty dishes. Be sure to ask for a bag to bring your extra scones home. It's wise to call in advance for reservations, especially if you have a large group.
