Better quality than Chinatown or Monterey Park, but selection is limited
Despite its dark, drab 1980s-era nouveau-Chine decor, House of Louie never fails to satisfy with their fresh and consistently high quality offerings served with a smile. While I've dined in more impressive Hong-Kong style banquet palaces, I haven't had better dim sum anywhere in the United States. Could their menu be more innovative and offer more variety? Perhaps. But in talking to the owner, whom I've known for a good many years, she was quick to point out that most of the restaurant's clientele have been patronizing this establishment for over 20 years, and it'd be foolish to mess with a tried and true formula. In any case, it doesn't matter to me either way. Whenever I try something new elsewhere, I ask the folks at House of Louie to make it, and on a moment's notice they reproduce the dish to a standard that is unmatched. And while cleanliness seems to be an issue at a lot of bigger dim sum houses, the kitchen and dining room are spotless here.
Recommended: Dim Sum (especially on weekends), Soy Sauce Chow Mein with Shrimp, Black Mushroom, and Yellow Leek (not on menu)

Have a little taste of Chinatown while in West Covina
For as long as I have lived in Covina, House of Louie has been and probably will continue to be situated in the middle of an unassuming strip mall off the I-10 freeway and Grand Ave. exit. HoL is a great place to meet for decent Chinese food if you are east of Los Angeles and past Monterey Park and Alhambra. What sets it apart from the over-the-counter dollar Chinese fast food joints is the lunchtime dim sum. Between a certain time, dim sum carts are trolling around tables ladened with different types of dishes and desserts. Dim sum is best described as a small dish good for one to three bites. If you are tired of the regular orange chicken and broccoli with beef Chinese fare, put your adventurer's cap on and head to HoL and with an open mind and tongue. Eat as many different dim sum you can handle. The prices are very reasonable. For about 10 different dim sum dishes -which I guarantee will over stuff you and three other friends -will be equivalent to a regular dinner for three at a TGIF or a BJ's restaurant.
Recommended: Go for the lunchtime dim sum
