what should I do? I need them, so I can't fire them, but they are throwing off my schedule. I try to talk to them. The usual excuses, traffic, alarm clock, sick. I don't want to be mean, but I have a business to run.

Maybe they are emulating your habits?

Stand firm, warn them, document it, then if they repeat, fire them. There is no point in prolonging this.

I would have to agree that you need to stand firm, warn them and write them up as well. Devise a system of 3 write ups and then they are gone and see if this doen't change their tune a bit. If you have to fire them I am sure that you can find replacement workers.

I don't understand why you need employees that are not helping you but harming you when it comes to your business? If I were running the business there is no way that I would tollerate people being late or not showing at all.

I would consider them dead weight and start hiring new employees.  It may be that you'll have to pay above minimum wage in order to find some people who are actually willing to work.  Have you ever thought about doing that (paying above minimum wage)?

I would suggest getting firm with them. Stand your ground; if it wasn’t for you they wouldn’t have a job. I would set up some sort of penalty system. Every time they are late give them a point; and when they acquire so many fire them. You have a business to run and your workers are only causing you extra work and stress.

I agree with Kelly. Truth be told, most places that I have ever worked have said that if you're late 3 times you're fired. I'm sorry but I simply cannot understand why you already don't have this in your contract and have it being implemented.

Yes I agree with the comments above, let them know who is running things and if they do not straighten up then they are out of there, be firm and strong.

My family has a deli that they have run for 37 years and they have had problems like this in the past. What they have done is give them a warning and then the next step is out the door.
