I know there is already a topic posted about sushi, but I have never eaten it. What is your favorite kind of sushi? I am going to a sushi restaurant on my next date and would like to know what I am ordering. Any help would be appreciated.
I also would recommend getting a floating boat. It’s the best way to get an assortment of sushi. My personal favorite is the sushi, it is so good. I could eat dozens of them.
Choosing the right sushi restaurant is more important than choosing the specific dish, IMHO. I don't know a good sushi place in Los Angeles, but perhaps others can suggest a place.
The key is that the restaurant should use fresh fish and should know how to take care of it. If the restaurant make effort to use fresh fish, any roll they serve will be very good.
Here are a few tips:
-> Usually, you can look into the long glass case in the sushi bar and see which fish they are using. Make sure that each fish is individually wrapped and not touching each other. If different fishes are wrapped together or touching each other, they don't know or don't care about how to prepare the fish.
-> Before eating, pick up the fish, put it to your nose and smell it. There should NOT be any smell. Fresh fish does not smell. ("Fish" smell comes from bacteria)
-> If you can afford it, I suggest that you try several simple hand rolls: Salmon, Albacore, Tuna, Yellowtail, etc. Or, as others suggested, get different roll combination on a float or on a plate.
-> Look at the menu to see which rolls comes with "Soy Paper." Soy paper is softer and easier to chew than dry seaweed that is more commonly used. It is more expensive though.
-> If you like salads and don't care much for the rice, try the "Sashimi Salad." It is usually salad with several different fishes on top.
-> If you want to try different fishes on a roll, try the "Rainbow Roll." It's usually several different fishes wrapped on a roll.
-> Do not order "Spicy" Tuna Roll. I heard that it's to disguise old tuna.
-> My favorite fish is fresh salmon. My favorite sushi restaurant has "Salmon Lover Roll." Other places probably has a similar roll. Look at the menu or ask them for the roll with your favorite fish in it.
Wow just reading all of the made my stomach turn. I guess that I am not to be eating sushi. I just can not imagine eating any meat raw. I have known people that eat raw hot dogs and that sounds just as bad as sushi to me.
I have never tried sushi before. Its looks interesting and I have always wanted to try it. I live in a small town and we don’t have a sushi restaurant. I am sure there would be one nearby though. When I do try it I will let all of you know what I think.
I live off of sushi, it's great and healthy, think what you want, but i've been eating it for years, you dont have to eat it if you do not want to, it's really your choice, and i love the salmon roll, But I guess it's not for everyone, try it at least, before you judge.
I just tried sushi about a week ago. I am not sure what the thing I ate was called but it was good. I picked the one that was a shrimp stuffed with rice and some kind of fish?
My favorites: - salmon, but it has to be super fresh and just the right texture and cut - eel (one of the few that is served warm, looks gross but very yummy) - baby octupus (which is served whole and is not chewy, but that may be an acquired taste) I also like the 'special' rolls... the presentation is usually very nice
I do not like: - squid or octopus, too chewy and no flavor - yellowtail, etc
Random fact to the person above; it would be impossible to eat a raw hotdog; when you buy them in the store they are cooked through. They are actually steam cooked in plastic tubes that look like fingers on a rubber glove, and then the casings are electronically seperated from the hotdog and the cooked hot dog is packaged.
