That's What I Like About the NORTH
I recently moved to Atlanta, Georgia after spending a lifetime in the San Francisco Bay Area. Never have I missed Chef Chu's so much! For one thing, ask about "fried prawns" at any Chinese restaurant in Georgia and they look at you as though you are from the moon. Not ONE Chinese restaurant has them on the menu, not even the honorable P.F. Chang's in Metro Atlanta Roswell (arguably the best of the local offerings). And there is no Chinese Chicken Salad that bears any resemblance to the Chef Chu's. When I worked in Washington DC, I actually carried a large order of Chef Chu's chicken salad on the plane with me on my last section of the assignment. Chef Chu's is memorable for its thin as paper won tons - delicately fried, filled with a drop of stuffing that just makes you reach for another. Their prawns (that's large deep fried shrimp to the Georgians reading this) are delicately battered and a bit of heaven in the mouth. The nearly fat free broths in their clear soups are a comfort to the tummy. The lemon and sweet and sour sauces are delicate and fragrant - nothing like a melted lemon meringue pie. The service has always been quiet and non-intrusive -- the kind of service one expects in fine restaurants. I have had meals there for myself and one other person, and I've orchestrated banquets for two hundred-plus people, and the level of service has always been excellent. The ambience day or night is peaceful and lends itself to a pleasant experience socially as well as a quiet and gracious place to do business. I don't know when I'll get back to California - but I sure know where my first stop will be! Go out tonight and eat there - or at least tomorrow for lunch. You don't want to miss it if you're lucky enough to live there.
Recommended: Mentioned above - but for a real treat, ask your waiter to choose for you.
