Special place, excellent food, simple dining
If you are interesting in going beyond the usual well known to US diners Chinese dishes, you will find this restaurant to be very rewarding. My first experience here was when I suddenly needed to allow a Chinese government official to treat me to a real Chinese dinner. Kind of interesting: his treat, had to be authentic, but he had never been to New York before so I had to select the place. Fortunately I had had my eye on this place which was nearly always crowded but rarely had anyone except Chinese inside. It was a score. My host selected dished I had never eaten before, he was satisfied he was showing me the real thing and through the translator he told me the parts of China the particular dishes were know for. This is why I say that this restaurant features family style dishes from several parts of China. Recently, I mostly go for brunch. They have excellent breads that are sorta like the more well know scallion pancakes except they are now fried in old. Either baked or grilled with very little oil. You can get the pancakes plain or with sliced beef (kinda like roast beef cold cuts) and slithers of green onion or with egg and the onion. The steams and fried dumplings are good, too. My recommendation is to always try something you know and something you don't know. Each time I have been happy with what I have eaten.
