California Roll is where its at
I've recently gotten into Sushi and this place is by far the best I've been to. The sushi travels around in boats at the bar so you can just take what you want off of it. The rolls are a generous size, the chefs are friendly and the food is excellent. Always fresh.

Substandard but Cheap
Came here because Kisaku (next door) was closed on Tuesday. First sign of trouble: place was packed not a single Japanese or Asian in sight. Second hint - waitress didn't even greet us - we had to grab the menus and find a table ourselves. The place was crowded, but this was your typical eat-all-you-can sushi-lover wannabes. The sushi on the conveyor belt was a novelty if you haven't seen one before, but the variety was limited and the rice inferior. The a la carte dishes were even worse - the udon was terrible - the soup is just water flavored with a dash of soy sauce. The tempura was passable, but the batter somewhat on the heavy side. The beef teriyaki - beef so-so, but the sauce way too sweet. It appears that the management and staff are Korean, not Japanese, which might explain things. For more authentic food and better service, although costing more, go to Kisaku next door (but not on Tuesdays!)

Economical & Tasty Sushi
For those of us on a budget, yet crave Sushi, really GOOD sushi, California Roll beat's all other restaurants hands down! Either sit-down or take-out, you won't go wrong with their selection and lively atmosphere. This is one of my top 5 restaurants in San Mateo, and other's are hard to beat their selection, service, and most important - PRICES.
Recommended: Unagi, Calif Roll, Shrimp Tempura Dinner, and Miso Soup.
