Just wonderful
After five days in San Diego, my husband and I made a real find--Berta's in Old Town. Mexican restaurants are a dime-a-dozen in San Diego, and they definitely vary in quality. Berta's, which specializes in Latin American cuisine--Spanish, Venezuelan, Chilean, Brazilian--was different, cozy and offered incredible food. Their tapas menu allows diners to sample a variety of their fare, and the five items we ordered were all excellent. Their empanadas and their seviche were the best I've ever had, and the banana/coconut dessert was to die for. Though many Old Town restaurants are noisy and crowded with margarita-soaked tourists, Berta's was an undiscovered gem out of the fray on Twigg Street. It was like having dinner in a friend's house, especially due to the friendly, personal, attentive-yet-unobtrusive service of Berta's daughter. Forget the highly-advertised Old Town cocinas--make the walk to Berta's.
Recommended: empanadas, ceviche, and definitely the banana/coconut dessert
