Restaurant - American, Bar, Pub Food, Brewery

While the name is definitely Gaelic, this is not an Irish pub. It's a bar that features a range of microbrews and cuisine to match.

Good Service in My Experience
Just wanted to say that I've been to Anam a dozen times or more and have never had bad service, either eating or at the bar. They've got a nice selection of domestic microbrews and imports - interesting Belgian ales. I like the option of ordering 4 4oz. sampler glasses. Decent bar food, nice atmosphere.

Cool Space and Decor Mask Atrocious Service and Sub-par Fare
Are you kidding me? Phantom Great 8 for the mac and cheese? I've had better out of a box. And I'm no stranger to good mac and cheese. You'd think the food would have tasted better, given we were left to starve by our inattentive waiter for 30-40 minutes...but no. The risotto was borderline rancid and the mac and cheese combined 4 or so cheeses indiscriminantly. Stick to burgers if you're dining here.

Rude Bar Owner
We were there on New Year's Eve (have been regulars there) and the owner was very rude to us; he was all about the money and nothing else. Not a good feeling.

Great Food and Atmosphere, Very Poor Service
After hearing rave reviews about the burgers at Anam Cara from a friend, my boyfriend and I decided to give it a shot one night. The Irish pub atmosphere was great - it was small, but not crowded when we went. Hundreds of beers on tap to try out as well. We ended up ordering just two burgers, which took close to an HOUR to get. About 3-4 tables were seated after us and I just sat and watched as the waitress served them first (all burgers as well). Some of the other customers came in a half hour after us and were still served their food first. After waiting 45 minutes, I asked the waitress about the food. She came up with the lame excuse that orders for burgers all came in at once. I don't know how that should make any difference - the orders should have been put into the kitchen in the order they were received. And it makes no sense that people arriving 30 minutes later than us should get their food first. And, to top it all off, the waitress had gotten my order wrong. Overall, I thought the food at Anam Cara was great (the fries are very good!)and it is a great place for dining and drinking. But, based on my first experience there, I may never eat there again. With the hour that I wasted waiting for my food, I could have killed the cow myself and cooked it up.

My Favorite Place
Stephanie and I go there all the time. Fireplace, good wine, great beer, Guinness served correctly, great food. I'm always surprised by new things on the menu -- and the little things they sneak in are the best -- like the pea tendrils and the warm peach salad. The bartenders are excellent, the music is great, and the servers don't miss a thing. Hang at the bar or watch the sidewalk strollers.

Great Food and Beer, Poor People Skills
Yes, the staff, especially Dave the owner, are incredibly rude at Anam Cara. I was very shocked by Dave's lack of basic common courtesy. Not only do you have to hit the bartender over the head with a hammer to get them to quit staring into space and serve you a beer, but they act like they're doing you the hugest favor in the world when they do serve you. Dave, in particular, is way too full of himself. I never understood smugness and arrogance, but it's apparent the Anam Cara people need to somehow validate themselves, so they pretend to be better than everyone else. I was absolutely appalled when Dave the owner, rather than ask in the question form, DEMANDED that I move from the seat I was in for 2 hours so that a couple could sit at the bar side-by side. All this jerk, or one of the people who wanted to sit had to do was ask me to move. They didn't even need to say "please," although that would have been very nice. Dave, the owner of Anam Cara, does not deserve your business. It's really a pity, too, because Anam Cara has such fantastic food, beer, and ambiance.

Top of My List Right Now
First of all, it's definitely not an Irish pub. It's simply the best beer bar and restaurant in Boston right now. Believe me, I have been to almost all the others, and while there are some great ones -- Redbones comes to mind -- this place is head and shoulders above the others. I rarely give all superlatives to a restaurant, but other than moving the whole place from Brookline to a spot much closer to my house, there is nothing that can be suggested to improve this place. Great chef, great owners and great staff. The bartenders really know beer, which is critical at a place like this. If you know someone who drinks micros and craft brews, take him/her here. That person will be your friend forever.

Anam Cara Is the Place to Go
Anam Cara has a great atmosphere, great food, great staff, and great everything. They have so much to offer. They have quiz nights on Sundays with Stump. This is truly an Irish Pub - both owners are straight from the motherland and they are some of the friendliest people around. A great place to be.
